A recently added ‘showcase’ is the website www.whereyourmoneygoes.gov.ie – an official website exploring spend by the Irish Government which uses datasets from data.gov.ie on voted government expenditure. The aim of this website is to enable greater transparency and give a better understanding about how the government spends your money. It is a graphical, easy-to-use tool that allows users to quickly drill into the various sectors that make up the €68 billion of this year’s government expenditure. Information is broken down into sectors (health, welfare, education and so on) giving the public an easy way to see how and where the money is being spent. With 10 years’ worth of data available and using interactive charts and graphs, users can explore the data in a variety of ways.  Features of the website include:

  • Analysis of Government expenditure
  • Dedicated summaries for the main categories of expenditure (Social Protection, Health, Education etc.)
  • A high-level summary of expenditure related to servicing the national debt, EU contributions etc.
  • Interactive charts with drill-down capabilities and multiple download options
  • Trend analysis of expenditure over the last ten years

The website was launched by Minister for State Eoghan Murphy on the 11th April – the Press Release and promotional video can be viewed here.
