EU Open Data Days

On the 19th and 20th of March 2025, the Irish Open Data Team attended the European Union (EU) Open Days in the European Convention Centre in Luxembourg. The 2-day event was opened to a wide range of local and national organisations. It was organised by the team at data.europa.eu.
High-level speakers include the Prime Minister of Minister of Luxembourg, Luc Frieden, the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security; Interinstitutional Relations and Transparency, Maroš Šefčovič, who emphasised the importance of open data to ensure transparency and inspire trust. The Polish Undersecretary of State, Ministry of Digital Affairs Rafał Rosiński also spoke and reissued the Polish governments invitation to The Future is Data Conference in Poland in April (https://polish-presidency.consilium.europa.eu/en/events/the-future-is-data-conference/). AI featured very strongly in the two-day event, as well as Data Altruism, Open Science Research, and an EU Open Research Repository. Stefaan Verhulst of GovLAB in New York spoke on the 4th wave of open data and how it may combine open data and Generative AI creatively for social impact. There was also a presentation from the European Commission’s Directorate General for Translations, as well as Integrity Watch EU.
Metadata practices was raised and innovative solutions for interoperability including automated data quality improvements, open-source infrastructure and effective engagement strategies for public administrations and users. The FAIR principles (findable, accessible, interoperable and reuseable) were highlighted to show how it can contribute to initiatives such as the European Green Deal and the blue economy.
The event closed with a speech from António Carneiro, Director, Access to and Reuse of Public Information, Publications Office of the European Union.
