Creating Open Data on Plastic Pollution

8 August 2019

Check out OpenLitterMap, a web app that aims to build the world’s most extensive database of litter.  This initiative, which uses open data mapping, was developed by Séan Lynch to help deal with the global litter crisis in a novel way.

OpenLitter Map aims to build the world’s most extensive database of litter, maintained by citizen scientists.  By mapping and communicating the litter around people’s homes you can tell a very powerful story which has the potential to change behaviors.  OpenLitterMap.com empowers anyone to map and share exceptionally high quality geospatial data on plastic pollution anywhere.  All of the data is free to view and download by anyone to fix the problems of plastic pollution and users are rewarded with Littercoin for doing the work.

You can help by contributing to OpenLitterMap.  The web app is about to launch soon for iOS and Android which will make data collection even easier!
