ARIADNE and Ireland's cultural heritage data

ARIADNE (Advanced Research Infrastructure for Archaeological Dataset Networking in Europe) brings together and integrates existing archaeological research data infrastructures so that researchers can use the various distributed datasets and new and powerful technologies as an integral component of the archaeological research methodology. There is now a large availability of archaeological digital datasets that span different periods, domains and regions and more are continuously created as a result of the increasing use of IT.

As an ARIADNE project partner, The Discovery Programme utilised datasets from the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. The National Monuments Service's Archaeological Survey of Ireland and the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage were submitted to the online web portal of ARIADNE as sites and monuments databases, allowing for integration with other national inventories from Europe. This opens up Irish cultural heritage data to a wider European e-research infrastructure for discovery as well as data integration through the implementation of linked open data. The datasets were enriched by adding subject terms from the Getty Art and Architecture Thesaurus allowing for greater interoperability with similar European datasets.
