Provenance information The EPA maintains the Register of Hydrometric Stations In Ireland. This is a dataset of all of the active and historical hydrometric stations in Ireland collected as part of the Surface Water Hydrometric Programme. Station information is collected from each local Authority, the Office of Public Works, the ESB, the Marine Institue, the Northern Ireland Rivers agency and other sources. Locations are verified using GPS and analog sources of various scales. The coordinates collected are used to create this points dataset. Each individual hydrometric station number is made up of five digits where the first two digits indicate the hydrometric area in which the station is located and the final three digits the unique station number within the hydrometric area. If the value of the fourth digit is between 0-5 then the station is on a river, 6 denotes a station on a tidal channel or sea and 7- 9 indicates a station on a lake, reservoir or a location affected by backwater. Recorders digitally record the water level at 15 minute intervals and are set to GMT to avoid the time changes in Summer/Spring time. The flow is given in cubic metres per second. Where there is a value of 999.999 no flow data has been provided. The relevant standard used is ISO 1070/BS 3680 Methods of Measurement of Liquid Flow in Open Channels.Other station information, such as river and catchment name, catchment size, lead Authority, county, Local Authority name, coordinates, waterbody type and hydrometric area have been included.
