Records of the Iveragh Peninsula's wildlife gathered by research assistants employed with the LIVE Project as they carried out fieldwork for various projects on the Peninsula.

Geographic Coverage: The coastal communities of the Iveragh Peninsula, Co. Kerry are the focus of the LIVE Project. These coastal regions of the peninsula were the focus of the team's fieldwork, although some records will also come from more inland areas of Iveragh.

Temporal Coverage: The LIVE Project will run from 2020-2023.

Provenance information All wildlife records gathered in the following dataset were recorded by a number of working professionals in the field of wildlife biology. Each contributor to this dataset is capable of identifying some portion of the wildlife present in Iveragh. Where a contributor was uncertain of a record (due to a lack of expertise or only catching a brief glimpse of an animal, for example), it was omitted from the dataset. A small number of records, however, have been retained where the species recorded was unclear (highlighted in orange). This is often when it is a toss-up between two species (e.g. common snipe versus jack snipe, or grey seal versus harbour seal). In these cases, contirbutors to the dataset wish to give the NBDC the opportunity to decide what should be done with each record (omit the records entirely, or retain the records at a higher classification). Data Capture Method: A collaborative 'ArcGIS Collector Map' was set up, such that research assistants (hereafter 'Knowledge Gatherers') could passively collect records of wildlife they encountered while conducting fieldwork on more specific projects. Knowledge Gatherers logged their sightings in this map by (a) using 'ArcGIS Collector' for Mobile when in the field, or (b) using ArcGIS Online having returned to the desk. This map was used to log the species, date, time and XY Coordinates, of each sighting. Brief notes on the behaviour and habitat occupied were also recorded for many records. Data Capture Purpose: Knowledge Gatherers were spending long periods of time carrying out fieldwork in Iveragh, while working on projects related to the region's biodiversity (primarily on reptiles, birds and cetaceans). A collaborative 'ArcGIS Collector Map' was set up, such that Knowledge Gatherers could make full use of their time in the field by recording the various types of wildlife that can be found in Iveragh, the time of year they can be seen, and where exactly they occur. These records have been used to produce articles and educational resources on Iveragh's wildlife, and to inform public events run by the LIVE Project. Original Format: 'Web Map' in ArcGIS Online.
