Eolas Dualfhoinse | Waterways Ireland is responsible for the water quality monitoring of the canals for the purposes of the WFD. The waterways covered include the Grand Canal, Royal Canal and the canalised section of the Shannon-Erne Waterway. The canals traverse eight catchments across Ireland, from the Upper Shannon catchment in the west to the Liffey and Dublin Bay catchment in the east, and are divided into 15 water bodies for the WFD canal monitoring programme. Each Waterbody is monitored by Waterways ireland and assigned an overall ecological potential. Canals are required to achieve good ecological potential rather than good ecological status because they are artificial water bodies. Ecological potential can be maximum, good, moderate, poor or bad. The data used were primarily from 2013 to 2015. |
