Openness rating:

This dataset details all STEM research and ancillary projects funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) since its foundation in 2000 to its dissolution on 31st July 2024, when it was merged with the Irish Research Council to form Taighde Éireann - Research Ireland. As its successor organisation, Taighde Éireann - Research Ireland has taken over the management of SFI’s historical grant data.

SFI was the national foundation in Ireland for investment in scientific and engineering research. Consequently, SFI invested in those academic researchers and research teams who were most likely to generate new knowledge, leading edge technologies and competitive enterprises in the fields of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

As part of its function, the Foundation also promoted and supported the study of, education in, and engagement with STEM and promotes an awareness and understanding of the value of STEM to society and, in particular, to the growth of the economy.

SFI grants were made based upon the merit review of distinguished scientists.
