Conversion of data by third parties from PDFs published by State Bodies, e.g. CAO points

Dúnta

Someone did a great historical analysis of CAO points http://glennmoy.github.io/data/2016/08/16/cao-analysis.html

This information is available on this site but only as a PDF.

The author published his work as a GitHub repo (linked), which includes machine-readable data which he extracted from the PDFs (the repo doesn't have a licence so I assume he would have to be contacted if his data was to be used here).

Is data.gov.ie set up to accept or request conversions from third parties? Is there a mechanism where important datasets locked in PDFs or similar could be converted to csv/json?

I'd have a go myself with a few datasets, but it's unclear: (a) whether this site is set up to receive submissions from individuals and (b) which datasets that are currently locked up in PDFs that would be important to end users.

I see from the minutes of the ODGB that a hackathon is in the works, might be an interesting project for it.

Thank you for your comments. Data.gov.ie does not accept conversions from third parties at this time. If a request for a particular dataset to be converted is received we can, however, refer the request on to the relevant public body that owns the data to see if it can be converted or if the data is available in any other format. The Statistical Analysis of the CAO Points System is an interesting example of the use of open data and thank you for bringing it to our attention. Feedback like this is very useful and welcome. The open data unit can be contacted at opendata@per.gov.ie
