This collection Activity related to the pilot Marine Institute Deep water mooring deployed in the SOuth Rockall Trough in October 2018. The collection activity is based on time seriesdata from several autonomous sensors measuring temperature, salinity and currents in the South Rockall Trough . The observations are performed along the water column from 500m below the surface to 3000 m depth and aim to advance our understanding of key environmental processes in the North Eastern Atlantic Ocean. The mooring consists of 2 x 75 Hz ADCPs at 500m and 1000m and an array of 10 SEABird SBE37 CTD Sensors at the following depth intervals…. 500, 625, 750, 1000, 1250, 1500, 1750, 2000, 2500, 3000. The CTD array sensors were fully calibrated by Seabird in Germany both pre and post deployment. The mooring is retrieved by acoustic release and contains an iridium transponder and flash light to aid retrieval on return to the surface.

Water masses have recognisable properties of temperature, salinity, oxygen and nutrients, unless they have been modified significantly by mixing with other water masses. Several different water masses are found in the south Rockall Trough, such as Labrador Sea Water, which travels from the western Atlantic, Mediterranean Overflow Water and SubArctic Intermediate Water. Transport of these water masses tells us a lot about ocean circulation in the northeast Atlantic.
