Abstract: This map identifies examples of areas suitable for wetland restoration or creation as a nature based solution to fluvial flooding by providing additional soil water storage. Opportunities identified within SACs and SPAs should be discussed and agreed with the National Parks and Wildlife Service before any plan to implement measures is carried out.

Lineage: Blanket bog, wet heath and bare peat were selected from NLC 2018 and areas of high and moderately high landslide susceptibility (Geological Survey Ireland, 2016) were removed where there was an overlap. The resulting layers identify areas which have a potential for wetland restoration or creation both inside and outside of areas designated as Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) and Special Protection Areas (SPA) and are not susceptible to landslides.

Purpose: The Climate Adaptation and Strategic Assessment (CASA) Section of the OPW is responsible for the development of nature based solutions (NbS) in flood risk management. This project is the OPW’s first nation-wide attempt to map potential areas of opportunity for the implementation of NbS to mitigate against flooding in Ireland. The maps offer a useful preliminary indication of NbS suitability at local and catchment level.
