These 26 mussel populations are within Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) designated for the protection of the species. Site-specific conservation objectives for the restoration of these populations and their habitats are being developed by the NPWS (see http://www.npws.ie/protectedsites/ and http://www.npws.ie/protectedsites/conservationmanagementplanning/). Under S.I. 296 of 2009, 27 draft Sub-basin Management Plans have been developed to provide the programmes of measures necessary to achieve these objectives (see http://www.wfdireland.ie/docs/5_FreshwaterPearlMusselPlans/). Any plans or potentially damaging developments and activities in or overlapping with the catchments must be screened for Appropriate Assessment (Article 6 (3), Habitats Directive). The NPWS holds very detailed information on the distribution and abundance of freshwater pearl mussels in many of these catchments, and this is available on request to bona fide applicants (see: http://www.npws.ie/mapsanddata/requestdata/).

Provenance information A first shapefile showing boundaries for catchments in areas of Margaritifera SACs was produced by the Forest Service in conjunction with NPWS in 2008 in order to facilitate Forestry planning in sensitive areas. Catchment boundaries were based on a river sub-basin polygon file (derived from 20mx20m raster cells and apparently based on a digital elevation model) from an EPA Water Framework Directive geodatabase (filename: EPA_WFD_v3.mdb), and were verified using OSI discovery 1:50.000 series mapping. This dataset was reviewed in 2009 by RPS Consulting Engineers during the preparation of sub-basin management plans for 27 catchments. During this process, and with input from NPWS scientific staff, some minor changes were made to the dataset. Two separately mapped catchments were merged (Capall and Cummeragh into Currane), the Allow catchment was separated from the overall Munster Blackwater catchment and some areas of overlapping catchment boundaries were amended. This file was converted into a geodatabase feature class by NPWS in 2010, and topology checks were carried out. As a result a number of gaps and overlaps were removed from the file. These gaps and overlaps mainly occurred due to some catchments following the raster-derived boundaries mentioned above and neighboring catchments having boundaries that seemed to be digitised along but not exactly following these raster-derived boundaries. The gaps and overlaps were removed using the ArcGIS Zipper tool. In addition, refinements to the Allow boundary were made. Brief version history of dataset: Margaritifera_catchments_cor - done in spring 2010. Slightly amended version of the RPS file. Amendments done for Allow, polygon was sitting on top of BW and wasn’t digitised properly. Margaritifera_catchments_2011_v01 - done March 2011. Topology checked, gaps and overlaps between neighboring catchments (with one boundary being digitised on top of EPA WFD sub basin, and the other boundary following the 20m squared EPA WFD sub basin) removed, multipart polygons exploded. Margaritifera_catchments_2011_v02 - done June 2011. Corrections to Allow catchment (Munster Blackwater). Boundary in North East cut through rivers before, follows EPA sub-basin boundary now, as does Southern part of catchment. Margaritifera_catchments_2018_v03 - September 2018 - Munster Blackwater main channel catchment removed Margaritifera_Catchments_IGTM75_2020_v04 - June 2020 - Munster Blackwater main channel catchment reintroduced
