The proposal involves the development of an interactive web application using the open source software R, Leaflet and Shiny.

The app will provide an interactive geospatial distribution of road traffic accidents for the greater Dublin area allowing users to filter a number of key variables like accident type or road user type.

The proposed web application, accident data and code will be open source allowing users to add or modify the app according to their own specific needs.

The Apps4Gaps ( http://apps4gaps.ie ) competition has successfully run since 2014.  It encourages participants to use open datasets from www.data.gov.ie to produce apps. It is run as a partnership between the CSO and the Insight Centre for Data Analytics.

In the process, participants will learn or increase their skills in computer programming, utilise the opportunities presented by open data, and be challenged in creating technologies such as mobile apps that can exploit the economic and social material presented.  This year the focus will be on third level students.

The project objective is to develop and deliver region specific dashboards that present summary environmental information for a geographically identified area and to demonstrate these for Fingal, North County Dublin and Enniscorthy District, County Wexford.

The proposed project aims to leverage local environmental datasets to improve the manner in which information can be communicated and made available to local stakeholders.

The environmental dashboards, proposed to be developed under this project, will provide local communities with a means of learning about and easily monitoring their region’s performance in respect of environmental KPIs.

Tough Soles is a project to walk every National Waymarked Trail in Ireland, a distance of 4000km and to create open source, freely available maps for each of the trails using open data available from data.gov.ie, Sport Ireland, and OpenStreetMaps.

While some maps are available for these trails, they are however not openly licensed. This means that, among other things, it’s impossible to reproduce these maps – display them in videos, for instance. The maps are also not available for some more popular trails, including the Wicklow Way.
