Several sat nav apps will display the speed limit for the location you are currently in. However, they are not always accurate. Speed limits are set by the Department of Transport and 31 local authorities but they do not share a common database of speed limits.
This is a road safety issue as this data will be / can be used to help drivers stay within the speed limits.
The N72 ("military road") outside Dungarvan had its speed limit from 100km/h (national road) to 80km/h following a series of fatal collisions. Despite asking a promenade map company to amend this on their map software, they continue to display the incorrect speed 4 years later.
As a map editor for WAZE, when I manually update the map speed limits, I use PDFs, MS Word documents, ARCGIS maps found on 31 local authority websites. This is not ideal.
If there is a single dataset for speed limits in Ireland, it will ensure sat nav map accuracy, it will help increase adherence to the speed limits and will ultimately help improve road safety.
Further development of this could include real-time speed limits which could be used to integrate temporary speed limits (e.g. near roadworks) into sat nav maps.
