Seabed still images taken with ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) Holland during CE10004 cruise onboard RV Celtic Explorer between 23 May ? 3 June 2010. Chief Scientist: Professor Louise Allcock, Head of Zoology and Director of the Ryan Institute?s Centre for Ocean Research & Exploration (COREx), NUI Galway, Ireland. Link to cruise report (PDF): http://data.marine.ie/data/IrelandsSeabedCatalogue/CE10004/CE10004_Mark_Johnson_NUIG.pdf. Report produced by Professor Mark Johnson and Dr Louise Allcock. Video recording did not work during this cruise, hence, only still images have been collected. Images are stored on a hard drive at the Marine Institute. However, there is a problem with navigation (the ROV camera was set on IST, and the ship?s navigation system on UTC, hence, there is a 1 hour offset), which needs to be addressed before this dataset can be integrated within GIS. This data was collected as part of a research cruise onboard RV Celtic Explorer CE10004. The aims of this survey were to identify and map benthic macrofauna in slope and canyon regions using conventional cores and ROV surveys, and to characterize the diversity and functional diversity of the bacterial community (with a focus on water column and sponge symbionts) at different depths. Other objectives of this survey were to collect material for the preparation of extracts in the MI biodiscovery laboratory and to supply marine structures (sponges) for biomaterials testing; also to isolate bacteria from the water column and sponges and screen these extracts for bioactivity.
