A protected structure is a structure or part of a structure that a planning authority considers to be of special interest from an architectural, historical, archaeological, artistic, cultural, scientific social or technical point of view. Given the rich built heritage of Galway City, there are approximately 600 protected structures in the city. It is Galway City Council's policy to encourage the protection and enhancement of these protected structures. (Galway City Development Plan 2005-2011.)
