Nature Based Solutions - Potential Site Identification - Floodplain Reconnection

Abstract: This data shows floodplain reconnection potential in Irish rivers. CFRAM and NIFM Mid-range future scenarios were used to exclude river channels already known to or predicted to flood, thereby leaving sections of channels where floodplain reconnection may be possible. Potential channels were further refined by seleecting those with a mean slope below 2%.

Lineage: Sections of river which overlapped CFRAM and NIFM MRFS 1 % AEP predicted flooding extents were removed, leaving gently sloping channels (<2% as per FSU PCD S1085) which are not known to flood, thereby having floodplain reconnection potential. Further sections were removed which overlapped with urban extents (Tailte Éireann, 2022) and the following NLC 2018 land cover types: buildings, amenity grassland, ways, transitional forest, coniferous forest, mixed forest, broadleaf forest & woodland, hedgerows and other artificial surfaces. Arterial Drainage channels were also removed where overlaps occurred as it less likely that reconnection can occur in such channels.

Purpose: The Climate Adaptation and Strategic Assessment (CASA) Section of the OPW is responsible for the development of nature based solutions (NbS) in flood risk management. This project is the OPW’s first nation-wide attempt to map potential areas of opportunity for the implementation of NbS to mitigate against flooding in Ireland. The maps offer a useful preliminary indication of NbS suitability at local and catchment level.
