Data 4 Nature Workshop

30 April 2021

Last year the Irish Forum on Natural Capital was one of the recipients of the Open Data Engagement Fund Awards.  Their project is to host an online Data for Nature conference to facilitate the preparation of natural capital accounts in Ireland.  Natural capital accounting is a cornerstone of the EU Green Deal and these accounts can be used to inform policy decisions at national, local and community levels.

Next month, Natural Capital Ireland is hosting the inaugural Data 4 Nature online workshop on Tuesday, May 11, 2021 - a day of presentations and discussion on collating, sharing and accessing data relating to nature and how it can be used to improve our environment. #Data4Nature

This free event will run in two parts via Zoom: a morning session from 10.00am to 11.30am and an afternoon session from 2.00pm to 3.30pm, with discussion sessions and a break for lunch in between.

The workshops will focus on the kinds of nature-related data currently available, and what more can be done to ensure that these data are open and accessible. We will gather feedback from participants in this action-based workshop which has two primary objectives:

·       Establish the state-of-play for nature-related data in Ireland

·       Make recommendations for improving the availability, accuracy, usability, accessibility, reproducibility, and discoverability of nature-related data in Ireland

Natural Capital Ireland intend that this event will examine the types of data needed for natural capital accounting and biodiversity monitoring e.g. data relating to natural capital assets, extent and location and ecosystem condition, services and benefits.
