Open Data Training Framework now available to Public Bodies

6 July 2017

Under Ireland's Open Data Initiative and as set out in Ireland's Open Data Strategy 2017-2022 (in consultation until 4th July 2017), Public Bodies are to identify and publish appropriate datasets on the web as Open Data. Our Open Data mission is to encourage and drive the uptake and use of Open Data and in doing so add value to the economy by increasing transparency, stimulating new business applications, building trust in Government and improving the lives of citizens by delivering better services.

The Department of Public Expenditure and Reform, on behalf of the wider Public Service, has commissioned Urban Tide to provide Open Data training for Public Bodies in Ireland.

There are different Open Data Training opportunities available to you if you work within the Public Service including:

General Overview Training

Designed for larger groups with little or no knowledge of Open Data. The core purpose is to develop knowledge and understanding of what Open Data is and what it means for the citizen, Public Sector and others. Training will include topics such as definition and benefits of Open Data, licencing and Open Data, introduction to the Technical Framework and Data Audit Tool and practice sessions.

Training on the Technical Framework

Training will focus on specific and technical training on the elements of the Open Data Technical Framework and will include topics such as preparing and publishing Open Data, conducting a Data Audit, using the Data Audit Tool, creating an Open Data Publication Plan, application of standards and formats, Open Data catalogues and practical sessions.

Training on Anonymisation and Linked Data

Anonymisation enables data to be published without breaching data protection principles through depersonalisation and/or aggregation. Linked data describes a recommended best practice for exposing, sharing and connecting pieces of data, information and knowledge on the semantic web. Training will focus on teaching these techniques and when they offer best value.

Training on Data Analytics and Visualisations

Training will focus on ensuring understanding of the data and creating visualisations to engage users and undertake analysis to glean practical insight. Topics will include understanding the data, visualisation tools and data analytics software, practical sessions and use of the 'Showcase' feature on the national Open Data Portal.

There are three different levels for each training type:

Broad Training: delivered to larger groups with participants from a range of grades and organisations

User Group Training: designed for medium sized-groups with hands-on training for personnel who will be preparing and publishing data classified as Open Data

'Train the Trainer' Training- designed for smaller groups of personnel who will be providing assistance to their colleagues working to prepare and publish data classified as Open Data.

E-Learning webinars are also available to facilitate learning if considered more suitable to business needs.
